Puerto Rico travel diary: Spicy Pineapple

Balneario El Escambrón may just be San Juan’s finest beach with its unusually decent surf breaks and a 17th-century Spanish fort gleaming in the distance. This palm-fringed yet almost untouched beach was our first destination in San Juan with two great books in hand (Nati was deep into Lessons in chemistry, whilst I was laughing out loud to Adam Kay’s This is going to hurt), scorching sunshine and some snacks that Nati hand-delivered from the local merchant. Two bags of roughly sliced pineapple, one lightly covered with chilli grounds. I love everything with a bit of heat so was almost impatient to try a slice of spicy pineapple - up until then I had no idea it was a legitimate option to hint chilli over pineapple. But it worked in perfect harmony: the natural sweetness was marinated in gentle flames.

What a perfect combination for an amazing day at the beach.
